Jeffrey Dean Morgan On Getting Into The Mind Of The Comedian In ‘Watchmen’
Anyone who has read “Watchmen” already knows the story is populated with former superheroes coping with real world problems and their own personal demons. However, none of these characters can hold a candle to The Comedian in terms of being a flat-out jerkstore (he’s actually much worse than that, but this is a family show here, people!), and for Jeffrey Dean Morgan — the actor who will play The Comedian in “Watchmen” — his horrible behavior really took a lot of getting used to.
“He does kind of have a twisted sense of humor,” said Morgan. “There were days that weren’t necessarily easy — because he kind of does some sick things – and so there were a couple days where, as an actor, that trying to justify what I was doing was a little difficult. But at the end of the day, man, it was awesome. How often are you going to get a chance to play the creepiest guy in the world? [Laugh].”
However, another aspect that probably helped Morgan cope with the brutality of the character was just the general, overall feel of the film, something that was made clear to him after reading the source material and working with director Zack Snyder.
“Really, ‘Watchmen’ is the deconstruction of the superhero,” related Morgan. “It takes what we know about superheroes, Superman and Batman, and throws them right out the window. It shows these guys as real people with real problems in society as a whole. It’s pretty fricking special.”
