It’s Official Jeffrey Dean Morgan Fans – Denny & Izzie was a bad idea!

According to the Journal of Medical Ethics (the first time I’ve referenced them here, if you’re counting!),the Denny Duquette/Izzie Stevens storyline on Grey’s Anatomy was the worst ethical breach on television medical shows studied for their portrayal of ethical issues.

Johns Hopkins University medical student Matthew Czarny watched Season 2 of Grey’s Anatomy and House and coded each event of medical ethics.

And guess which storyline contained the worst ethical breach?

The worst ethical breach? Czarny doesn’t hesitate. The multi-episode plot on Grey’s about intern Izzie Stevens falling in love with heart patient Denny Duquette. To move him up on the transplant list, she cuts the wire to the device supporting his heart, worsening his condition. (No happy ending: He gets a new heart, but dies. Stevens confesses and quits.

Oh Matthew, if only it ended there! Have you Season 5 yet?

ETA: Please don’t take this post in any way except the fun it was meant to be. I thought it was funny that this med student picked this storyline as the worst ethical breach on GA and House. Seriously, have you seen what House gets up to sometimes??

and the reason I HATE his whole stint on Grey's Anatomy. I'm probably the one only (or at least one of the few) who can't stomach his appearance on that show. I know, I know, the job boosted his career, but still. I find the story line so offensive and outrageous on so many levels, and I can't help getting all worked up (in the bad way) when I think of it (like now). Sorry to flame on your fabulous website.

Flame away if it makes you feel better. That's what I'm here for:-)

I was never invested in the story line since I never watched Grey's, but watching it later just for JDM I found the storyline pretty laughable. I like JDM in it, but the dialogue is horrible. And Izzie was just wretched.

I like to think it was just an act and Denny was using Izzie to get a new heart!

And thank you:-) I'm glad you think it's fabulous.

I never understood the whole “being attracted to a sick guy” thing. From an evolutionary perspective, it doesn't make sense. Also, in response to the “I choose you” line, I can well imagine many female doctors responding “Gee, after X years of busting my butt in medical school and competing with a bunch of type A's in residency, I'm honored for being “chosen” by the likes of you buddy!”
        …too harsh?

        • http://jeffreydeanmorganunlimited.com/ Rhymes

Maybe not harsh enough! Remember, we are talking about the woman who took her shirt off to prove to her male colleagues she wasn't just an ex-lingerie modelling bimbo!

And being attracted to sick guys, I don't think that fits in with her character. She was dating King of the Type A's at Seattle Grace,  that Alex guy. Anyd she seems quite ambitious - overcoming her trailer park upbringing, giving up her baby. She seems to think with her head.

Hmm, I seem to have a disturbing (to me) high level of knowledge of GA!

And whenever I think of “I choose you” I can only think of Ralph on The Simpsons and his “I Choo Choo Choose You” Valentine's Day card for Lisa!

wow…you do know alot about Grey's. I haven't been able to watch a complete episode. After 5 minutes, I get involuntary eye-roll. re: Ralph's Valentine to Lisa…ohmygodgirl…you are too funny!

          • http://jeffreydeanmorganunlimited.com/ Rhymes

Hey, it's not like I watched it. All my Grey's info was peripherally gathered from the Dennys scenes!

          • boops

I found it hard to watch those scenes. Not necessarily a commentary on anyone's acting abilities. I just found it unsettling to see him in an infirmed state. I must have a high empathy level for those I take a liking to, even if they're acting. Weird huh?

          • http://jeffreydeanmorganunlimited.com/ Rhymes

            Very:-)

Then watching him die over and over must be traumatic!

          • boops

            good point, but surprisingly, no.

          • http://jeffreydeanmorganunlimited.com/ Rhymes

That's funny. In My Time of Dying makes me sad.

  • LaughingVixenLounge

Well, someone has to stand up for GA and the whole Denny storyline *waits to be laughed out of the room* 8)

I never watched GA until I got sucked into the Denny storyline and have watched it ever since. It's just a simple prime time soap opera and cheese and rediculousness are common territory for these shows (and what makes them fun). As for the Denny/Izzy story, yeah it's completely wrong but hey, I enjoyed it! And lots of people were creeped out with the season 5 story line. Eh, I thought it was sweet. I'm just a sucker for sap.

OK…resume with the eye rolling. Ha! ;)

    • boops

I'd never roll my eyes at you because you're awesome :)

    • http://jeffreydeanmorganunlimited.com/ Rhymes

Hey I'd never roll my eyes at you either. Even if I tried my eyes would rebel!

I don't like GA. It's just not my thing, but I know a l of people love it. Though they should be watching Supernatural!!

And the Denny/Izzie storyline just didn't click with me mainly because of Izzie. I didn't like her at all. But if it wasn't for this storyline we wouldn't have JDM on our movie screens, so I'll give it points for that.

I want to remain a GA friendly zone and not offend GA fans. Mainly because it's not nice, but part of me fears they may have learned medical techniques to torture me with!

I like to think of myself as the Madeleine Albright of the JDM fandom!
