We’ll See Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Jonah Hex and Shanghai but not Red Dawn?

ETA: Some people have been asking for spoilers for Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s role in Jonah Hex. I don’t want to spoil anyone, but some sites have started posted the details and not every fan is going to pay to see a 5 minute scene. So if you want to know more about his role, click HERE.

You’ve probably heard by now that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has a small role in Jonah Hex, the comic book based movie starring Josh Brolin. Though his scene is only about 5 minutes long, I’ve heard that it’s the best scene in the movie.

Here’s an excerpt from the producers on casting JDM:

I wanted to ask about casting Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Tom Wopat.

Lazar: Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a friend of Warner Brothers, he’s done a bunch of movies there, and we tried to get somebody who had some gravitas to go up against Josh, and it’s actually one of my favorite scenes in the film, so we asked him to do us a favor, and he did it.

Was that for free?

Lazar: Pretty much. When you come in and do a small part like that, even though it’s an interesting role, Jeffrey Dean’s a pretty respected actor, and I could have cast him as Jonah Hex, had Josh passed.

Movie poster for Jeffrey Dean Morgan movie Shanghai

Shanghai, a movie Jeffrey Dean Morgan filmed in 2008 for The Weinstein Co.,  had its international premiere this week. Star John Cusack has been on a friendship tour of China and attended the premiere in Shanghai on June 10. It’s also playing at the Shanghai Film Festival. The reviews have been generally good. Hopefully this will encourage The Weinstein Co. to give this movie a higher priority on its North American and European schedule.

Here’s a Shanghai review

On the Red Dawn front we heard earlier this week that because of MGM going into receivership that Red Dawn would never be released. But then MGM countered with a statement saying that Red Dawn was still on for November.

But when TheWrap contacted the studio, its head of marketing, Mike Vollman, was adamant the the movie is “still dated for Nov. 24.” He had no comment regarding the Times report besides pointing out that it didn’t quote anyone from MGM.

I want to believe him, though I won’t be surprised if it turns out the rumours are right!

Why is there always a problem with the release of Jeffs movies? Days of Wrath was made over 2 years ago and still no release. All Good Things isn't even listed on IMDB for him and there is no release date for that. Also, haven't heard much of The Residents release and The Accidental Husband………straight to DVD or what? Come on. We JDM fans need our Jeff fixes. ugh!

      I know. It's frustrating!

I think his scenes were edited out of All Good Things. Days of Wrath is still listed as a fall 2010 release, but I have a feeling we won't be seeing that. The Resident? Who knows. Hammer hasn't updated their site with any new info for this. Hopefully they will find a spot to release it this year.

      Maybe we'll finally see Shanghai?

I am afraid Jeffrey's star rose when the bad economy was hitting the entertaiment business..if the powers that be don't think a movie will make a lot of money then they won't back it …movies have to find someone to release it for them…I knew its all politics in Hollyweird…I'm sure the movies will eventually make their way to DVD…Jeff cannot catch a break..dies a lot on screen and now his movies seem to be dying a similar death..and yet a lot of garbage movies are put out there that make it to the theaters..go figure…put Losers on my Netflix list…cannot wait to see it..my kind of movie…

      Hey Tigerlilly,

I agree. It seems a lot of his movies have distribution problems – The Acccidental Husband, The Resident and Shanghai come to mind. I don't think most actors have this many delays of their releases.

I'd still love to see some of these on the screen, but want to see them on DVD as soon as we can.

“Accidental Husband” 's distribution company went bankrupt, hence the three-year delay in getting it out. What I can't understand is MGM going into receivership. MGM? *M-G-M*?!?! I just don't get it. Seriously. It would be an interesting question to pose to Jeff, though, as far as what his feelings are on so many of the films he's done being so…limited…in their release/availability. As far as “The Losers” goes, it's a great movie in the vein that Jeff describes it, and I hope it translates as well on the small screen as it did in the theater. I know I was impressed, but when it comes to our man it doesn't take much for me to be happy. Clay was a great role for him, though. July 20th can't come soon enough!

He hasn't had much luck with distribution. Red Dawn would be the 3rd film that we know has been directly delayed due to studio/distribution problems (Shanghai and The Resident are the others).

I hope The Losers finds an audience on DVD the way The Accidental Husband and Watchmen did.

maybe they're all just a make-work project for JDM (too mean? it's meant to be funny) :P

Not mean, but wrong. It's a deliberate ploy to drive us nuts!!

Yes, it is all about me:-)
