We’ll See Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Jonah Hex and Shanghai but not Red Dawn?

ETA: Some people have been asking for spoilers for Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s role in Jonah Hex. I don’t want to spoil anyone, but some sites have started posted the details and not every fan is going to pay to see a 5 minute scene. So if you want to know more about his role, click HERE.

You’ve probably heard by now that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has a small role in Jonah Hex, the comic book based movie starring Josh Brolin. Though his scene is only about 5 minutes long, I’ve heard that it’s the best scene in the movie.

Here’s an excerpt from the producers on casting JDM:

I wanted to ask about casting Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Tom Wopat.

Lazar: Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a friend of Warner Brothers, he’s done a bunch of movies there, and we tried to get somebody who had some gravitas to go up against Josh, and it’s actually one of my favorite scenes in the film, so we asked him to do us a favor, and he did it.

Was that for free?

Lazar: Pretty much. When you come in and do a small part like that, even though it’s an interesting role, Jeffrey Dean’s a pretty respected actor, and I could have cast him as Jonah Hex, had Josh passed.

Movie poster for Jeffrey Dean Morgan movie Shanghai

Shanghai, a movie Jeffrey Dean Morgan filmed in 2008 for The Weinstein Co.,  had its international premiere this week. Star John Cusack has been on a friendship tour of China and attended the premiere in Shanghai on June 10. It’s also playing at the Shanghai Film Festival. The reviews have been generally good. Hopefully this will encourage The Weinstein Co. to give this movie a higher priority on its North American and European schedule.

Here’s a Shanghai review

On the Red Dawn front we heard earlier this week that because of MGM going into receivership that Red Dawn would never be released. But then MGM countered with a statement saying that Red Dawn was still on for November.

But when TheWrap contacted the studio, its head of marketing, Mike Vollman, was adamant the the movie is “still dated for Nov. 24.” He had no comment regarding the Times report besides pointing out that it didn’t quote anyone from MGM.

I want to believe him, though I won’t be surprised if it turns out the rumours are right!

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Will Fight Against 'Red Dawn' and For 'Lobo'

There’s been quite a few Jeffrey Dean Morgan interviews from the set of The Losers online in the last couple of days, but I like this one from Cinematical.  I think it’s the female perspective:)

Jeffrey Dean Morgan attends the Twilight premiereThe terribly handsome Jeffrey Dean Morgan clearly has a thing for action, adventure, and DC comic books. Collider sat down with him last weekend, and Mr. Morgan let slip that he’s stepping into the Red Dawn remake. (He also let slip a few f-bombs that he shouldn’t have told anyone, but we’re glad he did, aren’t we?) “I guess I’m more or less the old Powers Boothe character … I’ll be the old guy in it, which is cool … I’m very much looking forward to it. But I’m going straight from here to Detroit which I can’t imagine at this point.”

Morgan also planted the first flag when it came to playing the part of Lobo, soon to be the star of a Guy Ritchie film. “That would be cool. Lobo would be very cool. I don’t think that I’m as big as Lobo is, but if you could, like, transplant Mickey Rourke’s body on my head, that would be just great. But I don’t know. It’s an untapped world for me as well. Every time I kind of hear about something I go out and get the book or I look it up on one of your guys’ sites. We’ll see.”

Well, if he’s reading this one — Mr. Morgan, I suggest that you try to nab an audition for Jesse Custer. He’s one of the few American actors that has the right amount of grit. Or do a reversal on The Comedian and play the ever-so-good Captain Marvel / Shazam. Or jump the DC ship and try out a little Dark Horse with Fear Agent. Lobo sounds cool from afar, but you’ve already got the biggest DC badass under your belt with the Comedian. Go with something more charming.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan joins the cast of Red Dawn and also wants to play Lobo

Jeffrey Dean Morgan at the PS I Love You premiereIt looks like Jeffrey Dean Morgan is keeping rather busy and we’ll have quite a few JDM movies to see in 2010.

Once he’s finished with The Losers he’ll be joining the cast of Red Dawn, which is filming in Detroit. One of his co-stars is Sam Winchester’s doomed fiance Jessica, Adrianne Palicki. From Puerto Rico to Detroit should be an easy transition!

Apparently this is not a done deal, as he is still in final negotiations for the role.

He also has his sights on playing the part of Lobo in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming movie based on the comic book character. Lobo is described as having exceptional strength and fortitude. He enjoys nothing better than mindless violence and intoxication.  Sounds kind of like Denny…

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a very, very busy man. Having shot the thriller The Resident earlier this year, Dean Morgan moved immediately into production of the DC/Vertigo comic book adaptation The Losers, currently shooting in Puerto Rico. Now word comes from the actor himself that he’ll be taking a role in the upcoming remake of the 1984 John Milius cult classic, Red Dawn.

“I’m jumping back in,” Dean Morgan reveals to ComingSoon.net, ” I go to work on something about ten days after I’ve finished shooting ['The Losers']… It’s a remake of a movie that I love… ‘Red Dawn.’ I just love that f**king movie, ever since I was a kid.”

Red Dawn, slated to start shooting soon in Detroit, MI, takes place in an alternate reality where the United States has fallen to the forces of communism and focuses on a group of high school students who form a militant band to fight back.

“I guess I’m more or less the old Powers Booth character,” says Dean Morgan of his role, “There’s all the kids and Powers Booth is the pilot that lands in the film and kind of helps them take down the bad guys. Blow communism away. It’s a really good, young cast. I’ll be the old guy in it, which is cool.”

The currently-announced cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise and Edwin Hodge with second-unit director Dan Bradley stepping up to the full director’s chair for the first time.

“He’s the real deal,” says Dean Morgan of Bradley, “A real good action director and apparently a really good, stylized director with actors anyway. I’m very much looking forward to it.”

Red Dawn is currently slated for a September 2010 release.

“They’re making ‘Lobo’ right now,” offered JDM, “That would be cool. ‘Lobo’ would be very cool. I don’t think that I’m as big as Lobo is, but if you could, like, transplant Mickey Rourke’s body on my head, that would be just great.”

loboThe comic book character, re-developed in the early ’90s, is that of an intergalactic bounty hunter and hard-drinking biker. Designed as somewhat of an over-the-top parody of his violent anti-hero contemporaries, Lobo has become a popular mainstay of the DC Universe, appearing outside of comics in “Superman: The Animated Series” and “Justice League,” as well as in his own animated web-series.

“You’re always looking for material that’s kind of smart and fun and this seems to be where it is right now,” says the actor in regards to his interest in so many comic book properties, “The studios are really gravitating towards it, more than I’ve ever seen them gravitate towards anything in a long time. Comic books are really the thing right now and I don’t see that going away for at least the next couple of years.”

Lobo has two major creative forces in common with The Losers in producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman, a connection not at all lost on Dean Morgan.

“I do have an in,” he admits, “I’ll be elbowing somebody soon.”
